SCBWI Singapore

Dear Singapore SCBWIies,

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a safe and festive holiday season with family and friends.

This is the first of SCBWI Singapore's monthly newsletters, a new initiative intended to keep you up to date with upcoming events, news, competitions, opportunities, tips and relevant information to do with children's literature in Singapore and beyond. We are planning to make 2015 a big year for SCBWI Singapore, so keep your eye on these newsletters for details.

As this is the first newsletter, it has been sent a few days early. From now on, the newsletter will be issued on the 5th of each month.

All the best, from the SCBWI Singapore Team

SCBWI Singapore News

New Assistant Regional Advisor (ARA)

We are pleased to announce that as of 1st January 2015, Catherine Carvell takes on the role of SCBWI Singapore ARA.  Catherine has been a member of SCBWI since 2008 and her first book, Darcy Moon and the Deep-fried Frogs, was released by Fremantle Press in March 2014. She had this to say about her appointment.

"I am so thrilled to be appointed as ARA for SCBWI Singapore. Throughout my writiing career I have received a great deal of support, encouragement and advice from this wonderful organisation and I'm so excited to be to able to give back, and help develop the Singapore chapter. Since Ken Quek became RA (Regional Advisor) in 2010, SCBWI Singapore membership has increased from a mere 5, to almost 50 – a testament to Ken's great work setting up monthly critique groups, organising dinners with visiting authors and of course, our ongoing partnership with the world class 'Asian Festival of Children's Content'. As ARA I hope to further develop and support our members by offering a range of learning, sharing and networking opportunities for both writers and illustrators. I look forward to a great year of creativity and bookish fun with you all in 2015."

SCBWI International News

Opportunities for Translators

SCBWI has created a new Translator category for members, affirming the fact that translators usher works written in English into other languages, and bring stories written in other languages into English.

In a global era, children deserve to read stories from their whole world, and translators make this possible. Translators of children’s literature need our support. As with writing and illustrating for children, translating for children is an art in itself. Translators need opportunities to network with colleagues and connect with industry professionals in children’s publishing.
SCBWI has appointed an International Translator Coordinator, Avery Fischer Udagawa of SCBWI Japan, who can be reached at itc(at)scbwi.org.

The following opportunities are now also available:

1) *SCBWI member translators, or writers and illustrators who also translate, can select “Translator”* under Professional Roles in their online profiles.

2) *Members who select “Translator” can join SCBWI Translation*, a new listserv for SCBWI member translators working in all languages. Contact itc(at)scbwi.org for an invitation.

3) *Anyone can connect with translators via two new open Blue Boards at scbwi.org: *Translating from English* and *Translating into English* in the “International and Multilingual Area”.
